Talk Info:
In this talk we will explore the transformative potential of integrating databases and generative AI in enterprise applications. As Large Language Models (LLMs) are being rapidly adopted, it’s clear that they need to interact with a plethora of other systems in the enterprise and agentic applications have emerged as the primary integration mechanism. Of these integration targets, databases are critical, in order to deliver accurate, contextually relevant, and user-friendly experiences. There is, however, a catch – databases have extremely wide surface areas, and contain highly sensitive and privileged information. Many challenges, therefore, arise in integrating databases with LLMs – these include security, correctness, safety, and reliability. We will describe a principled way to reason about how to build agentic applications that integrate database-specific tools that can run the gamut from being single-use/circumscribed to highly flexible. In all these situations, we argue that security is a first-order problem that needs to be tamed in order to make such applications viable. We will describe “parameterized secure views”, a key innovation that Google has developed in AlloyDB that enables these flexible tools that allows for secure natural language querying for databases by building security right inside the database.
